lake house
About this project
The original building on the lake-front property, was a cherished family cottage that had deteriorated over time and was no longer meeting the needs of the family. The challenge of this project was to evoke the original spirit of the cottage while creating a new structure that would be bright, warm and functional. The result is a luminous, crystal-like form nestled in its surrounding native granite landscape.
Elements of the original building were conserved including the footprint, concrete retaining walls and some of the interior finishes and furnishing. The elm flooring and interior doors were fabricated using reclaimed lumber salvaged from barns across Ontario. Locally crafted, custom millwork provides bedroom storage, window seats, display shelves and a library. Continuous wood cladding on the soffits and ceilings creates a seamless connection between indoors and out, and thoughtfully designed lighting creates a soft, comfortable glow.
